Robert Kraft Delivers!
On Thursday morning, September 22nd, at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, in Brookline, MA, guests of the Brookline Chamber’s Breakfast of Champions were regaled by Robert Kraft’s stories about growing up in Brookline and managing winning businesses and sports teams. Scott Kirsner, Business Journalist, asked intriguing questions. Mr. Kraft’s responses were candid, casual, and inspiring.
Before the Program began, attendees snapped photos in front of the Super Bowl Trophy and enjoyed breakfast treats from Otto Pizza, Union Square Donuts, Zaftigs, Michael's Deli, Vine Ripe Grill, Cheryl Ann's, Whole Foods Market Brookline, and Stop & Shop.
Robert Kraft believes that when you have something good, you stick with it – like living in a wonderful town. He grew up on Fuller Street in Brookline, attended Devotion School and BHS. Today he lives in Brookline, five miles away from his childhood home. He “won the lottery” with his parents. They lived very modestly, with lots of love. He gets his resilience from his mother and respect for his name from his father. His father maintained that, you might have advantages by being someone’s child, but you can’t inherit a name. You have to earn a name. Both parents encouraged philanthropy.
At around age seven, Mr. Kraft’s uncle told him that he should consider growing up to be a business man and attend Harvard Business School. Though his family was not wealthy or well connected, he aspired to enter HBS. As a high school student, he crossed the Charles River, and visited the HBS Admission Office. He asked what he needed to do to get accepted. Years later he applied and matriculated to HBS.
Though Mr. Kraft still lives in Brookline, he has “traveled” far. He’s the Founder, Chairman and CEO of the Kraft Group, the holding company of the New England Patriots, the New England Revolution, Gillette Stadium, Patriot Place, International Forest Products, Rand-Whitney Group, Rand-Whitney Containerboard and a portfolio of more than 100 private equity investments.
Having revealed to the audience that growing up his family did not own a car, when he drives into Gillette Stadium, he says, he pinches himself.
Naturally Mr. Kirsner inquired about Mr. Kraft’s famous meeting with a delegation of US business men and President Vladimir Putin in Russia subsequent to winning a Super Bowl. Mr. Kirsner also asked about the Patriot’s game plan for Thursday night’s big game. The Vladimir Putin story was revealed – received with laughter, not so for the game plan. Attendees had to watch the game to find out for themselves. And – two lucky winners of the event’s Raffle – 2 tickets each for Thursday night’s Patriots vs Texans game – found out firsthand!
Robert Kraft handed the Awards to the 2016 Brookline Chamber Business Award Winners of the Year, including:
Award Nominating Committee: Anne Roth Meyers, Committee Chair; Ben Franco; Frank Caro; Casey Hatchett; Ken Goldstein
